AUTOBIOGRAFIA LUI NICOLAE CEAUSESCU

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NICOLAE CEAUESESCU

the autobiography of nicolae Ceausescu

Romania, 1965-1989. A vast work of editing that mixes official films with moments of private life shows us the personality of Nicolae Ceausescu, from the moment he burst onto the political scene until his summary trial and immediate death sentence, the true conclusive act of the Romanian revolution. The dictator is shown as he transforms himself from a young man from a simple, peasant family into an authoritarian leader with undisputed power who is invited all over the world, from China to South Korea, all the way to the White House and Buckingham Palace. The result is the portrait of a complex and contradictory character, as wily and astute in the public dimension as he was hesitant and awkward in his private life.

“After all, a dictator is simply an artist who is able to fully put into practice his egotism. It is a mere question of aesthetic level, whether he turns out to be Baudelaire or Bolintineanu, Louis XVI or Nicolae Ceausescu.”

Andrei Ujica

Andrei Ujica (Timisoara, Romania, 1951) recently worked for the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain but got his debut in cinema with Videogramme einer Revolution (1992), a compilation film he made in collaboration with Harun Farocki that studies the ties between political power and the power of the media at the end of the Cold War. His second film, Out of Present (1995), is about the cosmonaut Sergueï Krikaliov, who was onboard the Mir for ten months as the Soviet regime crumbled. His film The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu concludes his trilogy dedicated to the end of communism.
