dance of the invisible inhabitants of la casualidad In 1979, the military dictatorship in Argentina closed down La Casualidad, a sulfur mine located at 4,200 m.s.l. in the cordillera of the Central Andes. Just one man now remains at La Casualidad, amongst the ruins and memories, two hundred kilometers from the nearest city. “La Casualidad is an invention. There is no such man as the ‘last miner.’ I created this Beckettian character, the ‘yellow-helmet-superhero-of-the-useless,’ with René Duran, its interpreter. René was born in La Casualidad and worked there for several years but, like everybody else, he had to leave the city in 1979 when the military dictatorship closed the mine. I didn’t want to make a historical or political movie, not in its usual sense. It seemed to me that I had to bring the documentary material into fiction, into mythology, in order to create an allegory of La Casualidad, of its past and present history. The last miner, living in a city that no longer exists, working in abandoned factories, dancing with invisible inhabitants, could be this allegory.”

Vincent Le Port
Vincent Le Port (Brittany, France, 1986) graduated as an audiovisual technician before enrolling at La fémis, École nationale supérieure des métiers de l’image et du son. He has made several amateur projects, including experimental shots and medium-length films inspired by the works of Mekas, Brakhage and Tcherkassky. He then made Moussem les morts, the first feature film he has made with Jean Baptiste Alazard.
