ea3 - third exercise of admiration: cocteau In the lush countryside of Provence, a man is involved in an endless phone conversation, a feverish monolog which takes him through various settings while the only constant element is the sound of the phone call. “They say that culture is what remains when everything else has been forgotten and if today I think that I have found my way (or my voice?) as a filmmaker, these “exercises of admiration” oblige me to delve deeper, to search for the ghosts that torment my images, often without my realizing it, to find the way to express this admiration and re-appropriate and sublimate it by throwing it out into the world. Thus, Ea3. It is a hazy memory of a woman screaming her love and pain into the telephone. I must have been about twelve years old, at the most… I think it might have been Madeleine Robinson and the program Au théâtre ce soir; what’s certain is that when I was in Nice and I heard Poulenc’s opera The Human Voice based on the play by Cocteau, I immediately recognized the words and the violence of that primitive emotion from my childhood.”

Vincent Dieutre
Vincent Dieutre (France, 1960) a former student of Idhec (Institute des hautes études cinématographiques) and the winner of the Villa Medici Fuori le mura grant, lived between New York and Rome before dedicating himself to film. He has written various works on the relationship between film and contemporary art and teaches Film at the Université Paris 7. He has directed numerous films, including Bonne Nouvelle in 2001, which he made for the series Lucarne of the channel Arte and which received a special mention at the Locarno Film Festival. In 2003 his documentary Bologna Centrale was presented out of competition at the 21st Torino Film Festival.
