Rome. Nina is an aerobics teacher; the few people she goes around with are usually the wrong kind. Along with her immature, drug-addict boyfriend and her middle-aged friend, a former photographer who is always too cynical and too high, she finds herself involved in a feud between a gang of criminals from southern Italy and a gang of Africans who are trying to take over the heroin market. In the meantime, the three friends are suddenly accused of a double homicide which is being investigated by two police detectives.

“My interest in making a film based on the book by Giovanni Mastrangelo was sparked by its representation of an obscure, interstitial universe, both fascinating and intricate, which I picked up on the very first time I read the book. The challenge in adapting it consisted in transforming the double register of the novel, made of dilated, interior exploration and sudden shots of action, into a clear cinematographic form. I set the film in the slums of a declining Roman Empire, a Rome made of non-Romans, in which everyone is an immigrant and feels like a fish out of water in their own city.”
