man at bath

Between the Paris suburbs and New York, Omar and Emmanuel do everything they can to prove to each other that they are no longer in love.

“What came to mind was that painting, Homme au bain by Caillebotte, which portrays a man from behind who has just gotten out of a zinc bathtub and is drying himself off in a white room. He has left wet footprints on the floor. It is a rather daring painting for the end of the 19th century: a virile figure captured in an interior environment that is normally reserved to female eroticism. Nudity in men in paintings was essentially reserved to heroes and gods. But a man who is simply naked, observed with tenderness, captured in a moment of intimacy, vulnerable and moving, was a truly unconventional image for the time. This is how I defined my subject: I constructed a story that was the answer to that 19th century man in the bathroom, updated to the 20th century. A virile story without the Virility with a capital V: an everyday and domestic virility that is rarely seen.”
