the missing populace Cuneo. One of Italy’s largest provinces. The experiences of the farmers during the 1970s and those of their descendents alternate with images of the province. Traces of peasant civilization contrast with those of our recent past and our present: vestiges of mountain hamlets, the stratifications of the rural landscape, abandoned factories, the ruins of unauthorized constructions. It is the face of a territory made of ruins, scars and junk that reflect the distance and the correlation between the farming civilization and the post-industrial present. “Il popolo che manca is a film about the physical and the spiritual absence of the farming civilization. It shows the severing of our roots. As a result, this is our absence today, too; we, too are a ‘missing populace.’ The reminiscences we have gathered talk about people who left the countryside to participate in the industrialization of our country. People who have survived two world wars and the economic boom, who were born into a peasant world that rapidly transformed itself into an industrialized society.”

Andrea Fenoglio
Andrea Fenoglio (Italy, 1977) made his first documentary, Scritti di pietra, in 2005; it was followed by L’isola deserta dei carbonai (2007), which won the jury prize at the Trento Film Festival. In 2008 he directed La società invisibile and began working on the project Aristeo with Diego Mometti.

Diego Mometti
Diego Mometti (Italy, 1977) founded the social art group Belgradostraat, with which he has created numerous collective performances and video installations. In 2005 he worked for the Universitad de Chile in Santiago, participating in the collective work Memoria historica de la Alameda. He then began working on the project Aristeo with Andrea Fenoglio.
