the forest in between A journey into the very heart of the philosophy and vision of cinema of one of the greatest Japanese directors, Kohei Oguri, director of The Sting of Death (Grand Prix Winner Cannes 1990). Inspired by an animist sensibility and a constant search for harmony, he redefines in a very personal, poetic and serene way, the essence of a utopian cinema that can be regarded as the accomplishment of 30 years of reflection on the relation between the director and the moving image. “What struck me about Kohei Oguri’s cinema is his search for harmony, the pacification of conflicts. His films progressively abolish borders, plunging into a sort of second state which is represented by utopia. This is certainly not a condition of compromise, but rather, a unification. Like in Noh theater, it is a state that brings together the living and the dead, dreams and reality, modernity and tradition. This is why his pathway, which is profoundly wise, composed and meditated, seemed almost paradoxically the most anarchical proposal I had ever encountered.”
