the recall of the songbird A young woman walks through a forest and finds a decoy whistle under some leaves. The object reminds her of days she spent hunting with her father when, awkward and tomboyish, she tried to learn to use the whistle properly, as her father looked on sternly, and was secretly terrorized by the sound of the gunshots. She thus spends a moment living in the past, which brings back her desire to be accepted despite the fact that she wasn’t the boy her father had wanted, and to rejoin him once again now that she sees all his solitude and weakness for the first time. “I was in the throes of undefined emotions and searched for equilibrium in a rigorous method and this is why I decided to film in 16mm. I transposed my autobiography from southern Italy to the North of France in order to give this memory autonomy and to try to make it universal. Above all, I discovered that before expressing my subversive urge I needed to heal the pain. La mécanique de la grive is an interior, initiatory journey.”
