the four times

Calabria. An old, sick shepherd lives in a town up in the hills. Every evening he mixes together water and some dust from the pavement of the church and drinks it, thinking that it will heal him. A white kid is born on the black earth of a pen of goats. It grows, it gets stronger but the first time it goes outside the pen it gets lost in the vegetation. Exhausted, it lies down at the foot of a majestic fir tree. The big tree braves the passing seasons until the sound of a chainsaw announces its demise. It is reduced to a wooden skeleton, cut apart and transformed into coal.

“I learned to put the role of man back into perspective in Calabria. Is it possible to free cinema from human tyranny, which is a privilege but also a condemnation to solitude? Le quattro volte tries to encourage this path in search of freedom of the gaze, it encourages the spectator to find the hidden connection that animates everything around us. I always have the feeling that something is fixed on the film that goes well beyond the subject that is being filmed, as though the image were a portal to the invisible.”

Biography

film director

Michelangelo Frammartino

Michelangelo Frammartino (Milan, Italy, 1968) studied architecture at Milan’s Politecnico. He graduated in 1997 from the Civica scuola del cinema di Milano, where he began to work with video installations. He then alternated more traditional works of cinema, including a series of shorts he produced himself, with works that are more specifically oriented toward the visual arts (film sets, video clips, video installations). His first feature film, Il dono, was presented at the Locarno Film Festival and has received numerous international awards, including the Grand Prix at the festival of Annecy and the special jury prize at the International Thessaloniki Film Festival. Le quattro volte, made with the contribution of the TorinoFilmLab, was presented at Cannes in the section Quinzaine des réalisateurs and won the Label Europa Cinémas prize.
