Suriname. Two brothers, Benjen and Monie Pansa, leave the suburbs of Paramaribo for a maroon village. They go into the forest and come across markets and old illegal mines. After crossing the jungle, they go up the river by boat and finally reach the village, where they participate in the most important rite ever celebrated by the community of the descendents of slaves who had managed to escape the captivity imposed on them by the Dutch colonists.

“This is how we’ve heard it: during slavery, there was hardly anything to eat. They would whip you until your ass was burning, then they would give you a bit of plain rice in a bowl. And the gods said, they said that this is no way for human beings to live. The gods would help them. ‘Let each one go where he may’. So they ran.” (Lantifaya Masiakiiki, Suriname, 1973)
