Atsuko and her brother Rincaro are two Japanese students. They are going to Manzanar, California, a former WWII detention camp for Americans of Japanese descent. Their car breaks down on an inland road in California and they are forced to spend the night in a motel at the town of Littlerock. An improvised party in one of the rooms gives them a chance to come into contact with the local young people. Atsuko is delighted by the encounter and decides to prolong her stay. Even though she can’t speak a word of English, new friendships and a love story help her discover an apathetic and lazy America that hides rage and intolerance.

“There is so much that we are unable to express through language, a space we fill with gestures of longing, looks, glances. It’s a space that Mike Ott has opened a window onto, letting us observe people who are looking to be loved.” (Anisse Gross)
