milonga A few couples are twirling on the dance floor at a milonga. An elderly man is sitting by himself at a table near the dance floor; he watches them as he drinks and slowly smokes a cigarette. He looks at a mysterious woman dressed in white who is sitting on the other side of the room. A young man enters and walks straight over to her. Between a puff of his cigarette and a sip of his drink, the man watches them as they interact, their skirmishing, until he decides to play a part in that story he knows nothing about but which fascinates him. “The tango is a dance of improvisation; there is no predetermined series of steps on the dance floor. It’s all up to the imagination of the dancers to construct their dance, like a dialog. Body language is a fundamental aspect of the tango in order to be able to improvise. Two tango dancers are like two individuals who are intimately and subconsciously talking with each other. I adore to watch the couples as they dance and try to guess something about them from their movements, from the way they hold or look at each other.”
