portrait of the fighter as a young man At the end of WWII, a communist dictatorship comes to power in Romania. A few groups of armed partisan fighters take refuge up in the mountains and try to contrast the Soviet regime any way they can. For over ten years, the members of one of these bands, led by Ion Gavril? Ogoranu, hide in the impenetrable forests of the southern Carpathian mountains. They organize their resistance efforts and avoid the persecution of the Securitate, the regime’s secret police. “I decided to direct three films about the fight against communism in my country, after I had begun reading materials and archive documents regarding the time frame between 1945 and 1965. The stories of those years are controversial. Many accused the partisans of having selfish motives to hide from the authorities, others accused them of being nationalists, right-wing extremists. The fact is that nowadays in my country nobody seems to want to know about the past or to really come to terms with what really happened and why. These are the reasons why I decided to tell the stories of those years.”
