may they rest in revolt (figures of wars) Calais is a borderland, an open space that looks out to the sea. To the migrants who are waiting to travel to England, the city is a limbo in which the waiting can become endless. In search of gestures of normality that can make this obligatory stay more acceptable, the men wash themselves on the beach, they become acquainted with each other, without ever forgetting their condition as possible victims of raids and arrests at the hands of an ever-present police force. And in the meantime, the sea contains to lap at the edge of this land with imperturbable monotony. “This film shows the living conditions of migrant persons in Calais over a period of three years (July 2007 to January 2010). In so doing, it shows how the policies engaged by modern police States extend beyond the law, and cause gray areas, cracks, indistinct places between the rule and the exception. Individuals see themselves thus treated like criminals; they are stripped, divested of the most elementary rights that make them subjects of law and are reduced to the state of ‘pure bodies’ or ‘naked lives’.”

Sylvain George
Sylvain George (France), after completing his studies in philosophy, dedicated himself to making documentaries, in particular about migration. In 2005, he debuted with the first two parts of the series Contrefeux, which were combined into a documentary entitled Contrefeux 1 et 2: Comment briser les consciences? Frapper!, which were followed by Contrefeux 3: Europe année 06 (Fragments Ceuta) and Contrefeux 4: Un homme ideal (Fragments K). Between 2005 and 2008 he made the shorts No Border (Aspettavo che scendesse la sera) and N’entre pas sans violence dans la nuit. In 2009 and 2010 he partecipated at the Torino Film Festival with the documentaries L’impossible - Pages arrachées and Qu’ils reposent en révolte (des figures de guerre).
