chainbreaker Six peasants, men and women who were born in Sicily before 1930, talk about when they went hungry and how they were finally able to still their hunger. “The edited material involves only on a few of the hundreds of reminiscences we gathered in order to create the audiovisual archives of the memory of peasant civilization in Sicily. We used a very simple, and whenever possible similar, movie camera and asked men and women who were born before 1930 to tell the story of their life, starting with their recollections of their relationship with food. 1930 seemed a clear demarcation between the people who became adults before or after the economic boom which, starting in the 1950s, progressively influenced the Sicilian countryside. By giving voice to the last witnesses and protagonists of a civilization that has since disappeared, the archives wants to contribute not just to the reconstruction of that memory, but also to bringing that forgotten patrimony back into the hereditary line of the culture of our times.”

Stefano Savona
Stefano Savona (Palermo, Italy, 1969 has made numerous video installations, including La città infinita (2003) and D-Day (2005), and various documentaries, such as Piombo fuso (2009) that won the special jury prize at Cinéastes du présent at Locarno and the Grand prix du documentaire at Annecy. In 2010, he presented Spezzacatene at the Torino Film Festival.
