the bang bang club South Africa, 1994. Nelson Mandela has just been freed and the situation is critical. Tension has progressively mounted during the last, bloody months of apartheid and the various tribal factions, with the backing of the white government, have declared war against each other; there is fighting in the streets of Soweto. The Bang Bang Club, a group composed of four young, white photographers who are convinced they have the moral duty to bear witness to these events, moves around in this disorder. With the help of their photo editor Robin, they manage to attract international attention to the carnage taking place in their city. “I think they shone a light on a war in which over 20,000 died in four years. If they hadn’t taken those pictures, the world would never of known of the terrible price that was paid in what was apartheid’s last battle. Because I lived through the events of this film and because it was part of my own coming-of-age, I could identify with their rite of passage and many of the issues they were struggling with.”

Steven Silver
Steven Silver began his career writing and co-producing the documentary Gerrie & Louise (1997), which won an Emmy Award. He then made numerous documentaries, including The Last Just Man, winner of over eighteen international awards, and The Dark Years, an animated TV series, winner at the Ottawa Film Festival. He has also worked as the writer and producer of series and films for many TV channels, including the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, CBC, PBS and NFB. He produced Roger Spottiswoode’s Shake Hands with the Devil (2007), which has won many prizes.
