1943, the jungle in Siam. English prisoners of war are used by the Japanese to construct the railway that connects Bangkok with Rangoon. A team headed by Col. Nicholson must build the railway bridge over the river Kwai, an important part of the Japanese communications network. Nicholson disobeys Saito, the officer in charge of the operation, takes over and begins to direct the construction site. When an allied commando parachutes in to blow up the bridge, Nicholson finds himself faced with a dramatic choice.

David Lean

David Lean (Croydon, United Kingdom, 1908 - London, United Kingdom, 1991) was one of the most sought-after film editors during the 1930s, before debuting in 1942 as director with In Which We Serve alongside Noel Coward. Brief Encounter, which received three Oscar nominations and the Grand Prix at Cannes, made him internationally famous. From that moment on, adaptations of literary masterpieces as Oliver Twist and Doctor Zhivago, and grand epic films made him one of England’s most famous directors, winning him countless Oscars, including best director for The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia.
