the legend of beaver dam

1978. Nine boys and their scout leader are camping out in Beaver Dam park. One evening, as they sit around the campfire, their leader entertains the young campers with a song about a bloodthirsty monster who lives in the forest and kills his victims with a knife. Danny continuously interrupts the song and irritates the scout leader to the point that he humiliates the boy in front of the others.  Danny leaves the group in tears but when horrible Stumpy Sam seems to have materialized for real, Danny is the one who takes control of the situation.

“Dare I say it? Musicals have lost their street cred. Somewhere along the way, through the twists and turns of Hollywood remakes and derivative knockoffs, audiences who love movies and love music will tell you without missing a beat that they ‘hate musicals.’ But why? Can musicals ever be cool again? What do they need to get their street cred back? I hope The Legend of Beaver Dam may offer some small contribution to the inquiry.”
