triviality Tom Colt, a porn actor from Los Angeles, is standing in a stark, unfurnished room; he is completely naked and starts to masturbate himself. The man’s moans as he unsuccessfully tries to climax mix in with the voice of the director taking photographs of the actor, as he obsessively repeats a phrase taken from the book Total Confinement by Lorna A. Rhodens about shame and embarrassment inherent to the man’s violent act. “I originally had a different idea for the work. I hired one male porn actor and asked him to masturbate to climax in a room by himself. The camera and crew were in the adjacent room with the lens being focused through a hole in the wall. I expected the actor to run through the request with ease, but the reality of it was that he couldn’t do it. His embarrassment over his profession and not being able to masturbate to climax became the project itself.

Sterling Ruby
Sterling Ruby (Bitburg, Germany, 1972), graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001 and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, in 2005, is a multi-disciplinary artist. In 2008 he had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles, the Drawing Center in New York and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Bergamo, Italy. Recent group exhibitions were at the Deitch Projects in New York, at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
