white irish drinkers Brooklyn, fall 1975. Brian Leary is eighteen years old and spends his time committing petty crimes with his older brother, Danny. But Brian’s true vocation isn’t misdemeanors, it’s painting and he indulges his passion secretly in his parents’ basement, where he isolates himself to hide from his father’s alcoholic violence and his mother’s depression. When the news gets out that the Rolling Stones are going to play in the club where Brian works, the whole neighborhood is excited and the young man thinks that he has finally found a way to leave the area for good. “I have always been fascinated with the themes of family, of neighborhood, and of the tortured search for, and withholding of, love. In creating the Leary family, I saw in their private world a microcosm of that place and time: the power of drink, the unnamed yearning for something that seems out of reach, and the grasping of the familiar over the reach for change, and the swaggering fear of the unknown world outside the neighborhood.”
