in praise of reason A full immersion into the mental universe of a man who has chosen drugs as his existential dimension. A choice that is pondered, searched for, motivated, conscious to the fact that its roots go back to war, death, the absurd but which sounds like a desperate hymn to life. “Despite myself, in recent months I have studied the human species from close up. Not much needs to be added to the fact that human beings are a very complicated species, even more so than scorpions: in fact, scorpions can survive a nuclear war, humans can’t. They are vulnerable. I have nothing against capitalism. But why shouldn’t we accept the fact that scorpions know how to live their lives and human beings don’t? Why should Karl Marx wish happiness to human beings and not to scorpions? Or to dogs and to birds? Recently, I have reflected on these questions and I isolated myself for five months to study human beings from very close up; I will bring all this into my next film, Les (vraies) histoires de la drogue.”
