17 FILLES

17 GIRLS
by Delphine Coulin, Muriel Coulin
Country: France
Year: 2011
Duration: 90'

In an ocean-side town, seventeen girls who attend the same high school decide that they will radically turn their tranquil provincial lives upside down and make a shocking decision. Leaving their neighbors thunderstruck, the adolescent girls decide to all get pregnant at the same moment, sparking the incomprehension of their peers and the adults.

“The moment we heard about this news item, we realized it was both intriguing and very telling about today’s society. Indeed, this is something that could have happened in our hometown, Lorient. [...] The choices available here are few for teenagers, and parents, teachers, none of society has found a way to offer another outlook on life to them. The future is already mapped out for them in advance: a high school diploma, a job, marriage, kids – in that order. But these girls are going to upset everything: they want it all, all at once.”
