ATTACK THE BLOCK

by Joe Cornish
Country: UK, France
Year: 2011
Duration: 88'

London. In a low-income neighborhood, as five boys wearing hoodies are robbing the nurse Sam, a meteorite slams into a car. A small creature climbs out and the young thugs make short shrift of it. But it is only the beginning of a true invasion, led by big aliens who want revenge for their killed companion. The area becomes a battlefield and the group of boys is the one hope for the neighborhood.

“In 2001, a gang of boys robbed me of my wallet and cell phone by simply taking advantage of their numerical superiority. I was struck by the fact that they were so young. The idea of the Earth being the target of an alien attack has always fascinated me, so I started to think: what would happen if all that actually occurred in the neighborhood in south London where I grew up? And what would happen if something like that took place as I was being robbed? That’s how I got the idea for a group of kids, on the fringe of society and feared by everybody, who suddenly become heroes.”
