Juan Antonio, Cuba. A small fishing village, its inhabitants, the daily tasks, the days as they flow by: cooking, fishing, children to keep entertained and animals to feed. Then the hurricane. The village has disappeared, there is no trace of life as it was. All the inhabitants can do, as they sit next to each other, is wonder about the meaning of their life now. “The Strawberry Tree stems from a long term film project that I had abandoned together with my hopes of finding a viable answer to the documentary form’s ethical conundrum. When the village of Juan Antonio was erased from the maps, suddenly my footage grew in meaning, both for the uprooted villagers and for me. Thus, I was persuaded to start editing it. I built the film around the recollections of my stay in the village, taking it at heart to preserve the spirit of the peculiar relationship that had developed between the villagers and myself, that is, the fool with a video camera.”

Simone Rapisarda Casanova
Simone Rapisarda Casanova (Sicily, Italy), a former computer researcher, received his bachelor’s and his master’s degree in film production, from Concordia University in Montreal and York University in Toronto, respectively. He then debuted as a director in 2002 with the short Ti con zero, which was followed by various documentaries. The Strawberry Tree is his first feature film and its world preview was held at the Locarno Film Festival, where he just won as best emerging director with The Creation of Meaning.
