ETHOS (VERRÀ PRESTO IL GIORNO IN CUI GLI ATTORI E LE ATTRICI NON CREDERANNO PIÙ CHE LE LORO MASCHERE E I LORO COSTUMI SIANO ESSI STESSI)
by Fabrizio Ferraro
Frames in movement depicting ancient urban landscapes or disfigured nature contrast with fixed images showing political struggles for power. Accompanied by words whispered by the director himself, as he reads in candlelight, and by the solemnity of music for cello written by Antonio Vivaldi, we thus witness the explosion of a revolt against images of the world. “Too often we only talk through opinions, we only write to occupy some space. There is no declaration to be made, everything has already been said in the film, everything has already been filmed. Since we have talked and have said, then let’s give the word to someone who has already marked out an origin, a speech, as out-of-time, out-of-norm and out-sized as the film itself: ‘To extinguish hubris is more needful than to extinguish a fire.’ (Heraclites, fragment 108).”
