FREAKBEAT

by Luca Pastore
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Duration: 77'

The lost tape of the legendary jam session between Equipe84 and Jimi Hendrix is the catalyst for a trip across Emilia in an old VW van driven by Freak Antoni, who is accompanied by his daughter Margherita. The musician tries to transmit to her the values on which an entire generation was founded and which now seem to have been supplanted by cynicism and barrenness. During the journey, the two encounter the protagonists of Italy’s season of Beat, until they finally reach their destination – the one man who might know the truth: Maurizio Vandelli.

Freakbeat is an attempt to depict in a lighthearted and unpredictable way that intangible anti-conformist madness which was born in the ‘60s on the tracks of the intellectual revolution of the beat generation and which continues to be the basis for the non-homologation of entire generations, which are beat without realizing it. Freakbeat is rooted in today, without any nostalgia, but with the awareness that utopia and imagination are essential ingredients for counterbalancing the arid functionalism which too often tries to dominate us.”
