HANOTENET

THE SLUT
by Hagar Ben Asher
Country: Thailand
Year: 2011
Duration: 88'

Tamar is thirty-five years old and lives on her own with her daughters in a small village in the Israeli countryside. A victim of her own sexual desires, she gives herself to many men in the village. Shai, a young veterinarian who has recently returned to live in the area, is immediately taken with her. A short time later, the two have begun a loving relationship which runs the risk of being ruined by Tamar’s difficulty in being satisfied by just one partner.

The film is not about sex or relationships, but the heredity of violence, depression, self-hatred and self-destruction. [...] Therefore, the question of freedom needs to be evoked. The film wishes to ask whether achieving freedom is a result of shedding social codes, such as the morality and the banality of the ‘family cell.’ Freedom probably exists in territories where the boundaries are faint and undefined – as the soil and the animals function in the film – where there is no distinctive line between the domesticated and the wild.”
