IL CASTELLO

THE CASTLE
by Massimo D'Anolfi, Martina Parenti
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Duration: 90'

One year at Malpensa: four seasons spent following the bureaucracy, the procedures, the controls and the movements that are everyday occurrences inside an intercontinental airport. A public space, in which Italian and international police forces collaborate, where every gesture is captured by closed-circuit cameras, each piece of luggage is studied in all its recesses in an attempt to ward off a potential and  unknown threat. A place in which fear is the only thing not in transit.

“We decided to shoot a film inside an intercontinental airport because we think is the best place for understanding today’s pervasive obsession with security, fear of strangers and control strategies. The film looks at places that are usually inaccessible and invisible because, by letting them reveal themselves and establish a relationship with our known reality, the mosaic becomes complete and explains the unbreakable bond between controller and controlled, programmed occurrences and randomness, security and real or constructed fears.”
