INCONSCIO ITALIANO

ITALIAN UNCONSCIOUS
by Luca Guadagnino
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Duration: 100'

Starting with Italy’s experience in Ethiopia, and with the collaboration of historians, anthropologists and philosophers, the dramatic events of Italy’s fascist colonial past are analyzed in order to reflect on the very origins of our identity. The regime’s propaganda documentary is thus deconstructed, revealing something that was deeply submerged in the collective subconscious, albeit in a veiled manner.

“The film stems from the desire to study the Italian identity by looking at its roots, which are tangled up in a fascist past that is increasingly less understood by present-day Italy. The occupation of Ethiopia became the starting point for looking at a painful period in Italian history which has been denied for too many years and which – only thanks to the fundamental work of historians such as Angelo Del Boca – the Republic of Italy has timidly started to admit. The title, which was suggested by Ida Dominijanni, also refers to a research process used by the authors: to treat the past like a subconscious saturated in repression and, like an analytical cure, to bring back into the light that which was repressed. Subjecting the Id to the dominion of the Ego.”
