ITALIANI ALL'OPERA! - GLI ITALIANI IN ARGENTINA

ITALIANS AT THE OPERA! - ITALIANS IN ARGENTINA
by Franco Brogi Taviani
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Duration: 78'

Italian emigration as recounted through the journey of a young opera singer in search of fame and fortune in present-day Argentina. The world of opera becomes the backdrop for sweeping epic deeds which reconstruct the feeling of what it means to be emigrants, men and women uprooted from their own world.

“I wanted to give poetic voice to the grand migratory flow of Italians to Argentina, in a film in which fiction is a narrative element set in reality. I gathered testimony of the past, making room for opera and present-day aspirations in order to understand the millions of men and women who abandoned their homeland to construct a new one, without ever forgetting their origins for a single moment. Opera was the “soundtrack” which became the backdrop to the migratory waves and it has always been one of the strongest ties of affection and culture with that far-away and beloved land across the Atlantic. By interweaving opera into the narrative fabric, I was able to give the film spectacular and emotional impact, mixing passion and irony.”
