The shadow of a tree is projected onto the façade of two buildings standing side by side. The date 1900 can be clearly seen on one of them. In the window of one of the buildings, every day a violinist appears; he practices diligently and becomes a familia rfigure in the daily life of the neighborhood. On January 21, 2008, when the young man commits suicide by throwing himself naked from the window where he used to play in the sunlight, his next-door neighbor realizes he doesn’t know anything about the musician. The only thing he can remember about that young man, who was his own age, is that he recently completed a translation of Goethe’s masterpiece, The Sorrows of Young Werther. “I would use my camera to explore and learn, to give me an answer and maybe to find some of my actual neighbors. I understand cinema as an experience and knowledge. So I would use it without too many preconceived ideas, predisposed to revelation. I start from the idea that my neighborhood, like any neighborhood, contains echoes of the world.”

José Luis Guerín
José Luis Guerín (Barcellona, Spagna, 1960) lavora come cineasta indipendente, esplorando i confini tra finzione e documentario attraverso video sperimentali e installazioni proiettati in musei, gallerie ed esposizioni di tutto il mondo. Impegnato anche come insegnante di cinema e regia, ha girato alcuni film di grande importanza per il documentario contemporaneo, come Innisfree (1990) ed En construcción (2000), e nel 2007 e 2010 ha presentato alla Mostra di Venezia il film di finzione En la ciudad de Sylvia e il diario di viaggio Guest.
