LA GUERRE EST DÉCLARÉE
by Valérie Donzelli
Juliette and Roméo are young, happy and in love. When they discover the grave illness which has struck their 18-month-old son Adam, their happiness is brutally snatched away and they find themselves having to face the dramatic challenges which life sometimes has in store. Obliged to deal with suffering, Juliette and Roméo transform the battle for their son’s survival into a personal challenge, and discover that they are full of strength and courage. “The film is inspired by my personal story. To me, life is a succession of trials to be overcome, trials that are more or less difficult, more or less happy or dramatic. Slowly but surely, you climb the mountain; everything that doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Adam is the outcome of the love between Roméo and Juliette, why has he been struck with this illness? When Roméo asks Juliette, she answers, ‘So we can beat it!’ Thus, it isn’t a matter of good luck or bad luck: in this respect, the challenge acquires an almost mystical dimension.”
