LE VENDEUR

THE SALESMAN
by Sébastien Pilote
Country: Canada
Year: 2011
Duration: 107'

Dolbeau-Mistassini, Northern Quebec. Marcel Lévesque is a car salesman who will soon be retiring. Named employee of the month for years now at the salesroom where he has always worked, there are only two things that keep him going, besides his job: his daughter Maryse, and his grandson Antoine. During a winter that seems never-ending and with the city’s car industry destined to shut down because of a crisis that seems hopeless, the man has just one objective: to keep being number one.

“Marcel Lévesque is that person who has left home materially and spiritually, to join the system the way you join a religion, to paraphrase William H. Whyte via Jack Kerouac. In Dust Bowl Ha! Ha!, I wanted to show a man who never learned to live any other way than through his work. The loss of his job would expose failure and alienation. The Salesman works on a similar principle. Marcel Lévesque has reached a turning point in his life, where his old bearings seem to be disappearing.”
