César works as a doorman in a condominium in Barcelona. Middle-aged and unmarried, he lives with his ailing mother and every day he goes to work, invisible to the eyes of the well-off people living in the building. But, as opposed to them, the man observes them carefully, assimilating their habits and lifestyles, penetrating their lives and learning every detail about them. In particular, he concentrates his attention on Clara, who has recently moved into an apartment on the fifth floor and whose positive outlook sparks César’s repressed dissatisfaction, making her the perfect victim. “I decided that this story was going to be my next film because it posed a challenge for me: to play with the suspense at both ends of the spectrum; in favour of the victim as well as her tormentor. What really fascinated me about this story was that it was basically a fairy tale (a cruel and monstrous character who lies in wait for the pure and innocent victim) reformulated for an adult audience and very, very wicked. I’ve always been scared of what could be going on around me while I’m asleep.”
