Seventeen clips in which, following confused trajectories, evoking distorted memories and bearing witness to recent massacres, emerges a reflection, part documentary and part experimentation, on the backward nature of democracy in Thailand. The testimony to present-day violence overlaps the repression of the bloody acts of suppression in the past. Layers of cancellation and remembrance, all those who are searching for free expression are accused of the same thing: terrorism. “There is a saying in Thailand: the lives of people are different from those of fish. You can’t fish, hunt or kill for fun, nor can you do it anytime you want. According to another saying, we are a Buddhist nation and we use our religion to teach ourselves why we shouldn’t kill: this is what the five fundamental precepts say. But these two teachings become surreal and inapt the moment we are ready to strike down anyone who is accused, without clear proof, of making an attempt on the nation, on religion, on the king.”

Thunska Pansittivorakul
Thunska Pansittivorakul (Bangkok, Thailand, 1973) received his degree in education from the University of Chulalongkorn and for years worked as a journalist for various magazines. He is the founder of the project www.thaiindie.com. His films have been selected for over one hundred international festivals, including Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Toronto. His documentary Happy Berry received the grand prize at Taiwan’s International Documentary Film Festival. In 2007, like Ratanaruang and Werasetakul before him, he received the Silpatorn Award for emerging artists from the Ministry of Culture. He also teaches film at the University of Bangkok.
