SIP'OHI - EL LUGAR DEL MANDURÉ
by Sebastián Lingiardi
Gustavo Salvatierra, a researcher of the Wichì people and their culture, returns to his hometown, Sip’ohi, in the impenetrable forest of Chaqueño in northern Argentina. His aim is to listen to and gather stories of that ancient tradition, stories which have been transmitted orally from generation to generation. The only way this culture can survive is through its language. But as he tries to recount and depict this patrimony, he also has to come to terms with a certain form of resistance. “This is essentially a film about oral language, which to me is the most powerful one of all. I used to be bothered by language, I didn’t believe in it, above all in written language. This is why I became interested in film, because it has a completely different consistency. In 2007, I came into contact with the aborigine culture of the Chaco tribe and my viewpoint changed because I discovered oral storytelling. I found myself in the presence of something that was fantastic and, at the same time, real; something that was alive, with a concrete purpose.”
