Adolescent Terri has to live inside an overweight body which makes him gawky and excludes him from the social life at his high school. But inside this cumbersome exterior hides a sensitive soul which suffers because he has been abandoned by his parents. The boy is resigned to his marginalized role and is surprised by the interest of the vice-principal, Mr Fitzgerald, who helps him make friends with two schoolmates, Chad and Heather. A strong and unexpected bond is forged between the three, whose fears and uncertainties vary but are, nonetheless, equally hard to cope with. “The film was inspired by a short story by novelist Patrick deWitt about this kid, Terri. I thought it was a story I could tell, a movie I could do well. As much as independent film shaped me, the Hollywood coming-of-age stories of the 1980s also had a big impact as I was developing as a filmmaker, whether I had those particular problems or not.”

Azazel Jacobs (New York, NY, USA, 1972), son of avant-garde filmmaker Ken
Jacobs, graduated from the film department of Purchase College of New York in 1995. His thesis film, Kirk and Kerry, won Best Short film at the Slamdance Film Festival in 1997 and became part of the permanent collection at the Donnell New York Public Library. In 1999, he moved to Los Angeles to study directing at the American Film Institute (AFI). While getting his master’s degree, he made his first feature, Nobody Needs to Know, which had its world premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2003. Two years later, Jacobs premiered his second feature, The GoodTimesKid, at the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles and in 2008 his third feature, Momma’s Man, partecipated at the 26th Torino Film Festival.
