After the young priest William Smoortser tells his faithful a few less-than-canonical parabolas, his superiors strongly recommend he take sabbatical leave. Billy thus decides to get back in contact with Robbie, his high school idol, and go on a canoeing trip with him. The first day, they find themselves thinking back to the days when Billy used to play in a Christian band and Robbie played heavy metal guitar. But as night falls, they discover that they are lost and must deal with a series of strange events. “I worked at a Theology school over three summers during college. I met a number of priests who ended up leaving the church – taking jobs as shoe salesmen or settling into a married life. In those circumstances, questions about the commitment to your profession had to be tough – and as a filmmaker who isn’t making a dime and is struggling to move forward with my work, I certainly related and connected to those feelings.”
