The improvisations of Robyn Schulkowsky, an American drummer whose research helped create many of the most important works of 1970s experimental music. Images and sounds show the woman’s creative flair and ideas, following a non-linear rhythm of the notes which burst forth from matter that has been transformed into instrument. “Manon de Boer continues her experiments during her encounter with Robyn Schulkowsky, which take form in a series of films that reveal the portrait of a woman. In Italy and, then, Germany, the rotation of the lens leads us in a false loop where the visible is metamorphosed by the audible. The meetings with the musician make up the journey of an instrumentalist confronted with some contemporary composers whose evocation disturbs our appreciation of the pieces performed. The sound portrait animates the vision of performance spaces.” (Gilles Grand)

Manon de Boer
Manon de Boer (Kodaicanal, India, 1966) completed her artistic education at the Akademie Van Beeldende Kunsten, Rotterdam, and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Using personal narration and musical interpretation as both method and subject, she explores the relationship between language, time, and truth. Her work has been exhibited internationally, most recently at the 2007 Venice Biennial and the 2008 Berlin Biennial, and has also been included in numerous film festivals in Hong Kong, Marseille, Rotterdam and Vienna. Her work has been the subject of monographic exhibitions at Witte de With in Rotterdam and the Frankfurter Kunstverein, among others. She currently teaches at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent.
