Thi and Chung live in the lush, rice-terraced mountains of Vietnam’s far northwest territory. Like many young people in this region (which is on the main heroin route from Laos to China), they are addicts and are also HIV positive. Forced to live a life marked by the efforts of family members, friends and doctors to keep them away from drugs, Thi wants to kick his habit but Chung just wants to die. “Showing the daily struggle of living with drugs and the devastating consequences of addiction, the camera becomes a part of their existence and reveals how their ‘habit’ destroys their hopes and dreams. Through showing the destinies and tragedy of two individual lives, the film sheds a light upon a wider unfolding story about drug use in Vietnam and, in doing so, it hopes to contribute to the debate about how best to tackle this issue.”

Phuong Thao Tran
Phuong Thao Tran (1977, Vietnam) studied in Hanoi before moving to France where, in 2004, she received her master’s degree in documentary filmmaking from the University of Poitiers. She then debuted with the documentary Rêves d’ouvrières, which received the Yolande et Pierre Perrault Prix at Cinéma du réel in Paris in 2007.

Swann Dubus (1977, France) studied literature and cinema at Paris III University and debuted as a director in 2000 with the documentary 1977-1989, which was followed by the short Lettre à L. et à elles toutes and the feature-length L. Ville, which was presented at Cinéma du réel in Paris in 2007. He has also collaborated as director of photography for the film La goutte d’eau (2005) by Carole Sionnet. He lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam.
