Mike is a mediocre lawyer who coaches a high school wrestling team in his free time. When he discovers that Kyle, the grandson of one of his clients, is a gifted wrestler, he decides to put him on the team. But the boy is very closed and it takes Mike a while to win his confidence, thus discovering the cause of his difficulties. But all of Kyle’s hard-won serenity risks being compromised by the sudden reappearance of his mother, Cindy, who has just been released from a clinic where she was being treated for substance abuse. “Mike Flaherty is a decent, humorous, hard-working guy who just makes one bad decision – and the fact of the matter is that if he had really thought things through, he probably wouldn’t have done what he did. What interested me was how good people sometimes make very faulty decisions and have to find a way to live with them in the end. That became the compelling through-line of the story. What started as a broad sports comedy became more of a human comedy.”
