ALCESTE À BICYCLETTE

CYCLING WITH MOLIERE
by Philippe Le Guay
Country: France
Year: 2013
Duration: 104'

After retiring from the stage, the famous actor Serge Tanneur lives a solitary life on the Île de Ré, enjoying long bike rides. But when his colleague Gauthier Valence asks him to play Alceste in The Misanthrope, Serge is faced with a difficult decision. On the one hand, he’d like to go back to his former acting days, but on the other hand, he feels that the solitude has made him very similar to Molière’s character. In the meantime, rehearsals have begun on the island…

Declaration

film director

“It’s true that there is a minimalist component: two actors rehearsing the first scene of The Misanthrope for almost the entire time! But the film’s identity is created by the characters more than by the story, and I like to take my time to give them substance and contradictions. […] There are eight rehearsals and every one is a gamble: each time, we had to find a different mise-en-scène to make the most of them. I thought a lot about the duels in Barry Lindon by Stanley Kubrick, or of those in Scaramouche, the magnificent movie by George Sidney, in which the advantage between the two opponents changed hands each time.”
