In the summer of 1969, four friends rode on a raft down the rivers Zêzere and Tago, which flow from the middle of Portugal into the ocean. Forty years later, one of their sons writes their adventure in a book of poems as a metaphor of Portuguese travel literature from the 16th and 17th century. He decides to change direction and turn words into reality: he invites three friends to undertake that very same journey, and he asks his brother to film it.

Declaration

film director

“The great subject of the journey travels within the universal literature. It is, mutually, in the Portuguese literature genesis, fed, yet in the modern epoch, by the contribution of the Discoveries. The journey may as well be understood by one other aspect included therein: more than a translation in space implying movement, it will be the crossover of an interior distance, where the longing for a change and the demand of experience and senses, coincide. Thus, we intend to show the construction, by four people, of an archaic raft and its consequent sailing, starting from the geodetic heart of the country until the last and coastal river mouth of its capital.”
