Based on the autobiography of Bertha Thompson, the story of a homeless woman and a union organizer who, in the Arkansas countryside impoverished by the 1929 crisis, become outlaws almost by accident and agitators by choice. Scorsese’s second feature film, produced by Corman as a low-cost exploitation, is part folk legend and part melodrama, romantic and “Christological.” Gorgeous Barbara Hershey and David Carradine (in his first starring role) fell in love on the set.

Martin Scorsese (New York, NY, USA, 1942) graduated from New York University in 1964 and debuted in feature films three years later with Who’s That Knocking at My Door? His films include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver (Golden Palm in Cannes in 1976), Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York andThe Departed (Oscar for best director), making him – right from the 1970s – one of the most important American filmmakers.
