BULG-EUN GAJOG

RED FAMILY
by Lee Ju-Hyoung
Country: South Korea
Year: 2013
Duration: 99'

The North Korean government infiltrates a group of spies in South Korea. To avoid raising suspicions and conduct their operations undisturbed, they pose as an ordinary family. They live close to a “real” South Korean family: they are struggling economically, but they are still capable of loving each other. Their proximity throws the group of spies in a crisis: despite the interpersonal detachment required by the mission, they start bonding with their neighbors. Even though they support one another trying to discover their respective mistakes, a wrong move puts the North Korean agents’ lives at stake.

Declaration

film director

“I’d say that the film Red Family is like an onion. An individual’s pure white intentions are covered by layers of ideology and this film is about peeling them off. The characters in the film strip bare from their ideologies and eventually destroy their own bodies that contained them and return to naught.”
