EASY RIDER

EASY RIDER
by Dennis Hopper
Country: USA
Year: 1969
Duration: 95'

From West to East: Billy and Capitan American cross the United States, driving their brand new choppers to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. The epitome of road movies and a synthesis of the radical culture, a voyage into the decline of the American Dream, into the new dreams of rebellion, and into rock music. Indie to its core, it was produced on a shoestring budget and made millions. Directed by Dennis Hopper (Billy), produced by Peter Fonda (Capitan America) and Bob Rafelson, and Jack Nicholson steals every scene he’s in.

Biography

film director

Dennis Hopper

Dennis Hopper (Dodge City, KS, USA, 1936 - Venice, CA, USA, 2010) made his screen debut in Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and performed several minor roles in many Hollywood productions. He made his directorial debut with Easy Rider in 1969, which launched him as an internationally acclaimed filmmaker, receiving an Academy Award Nomination for Best Writing and winning the award for Best First Work at Cannes. His next feature The Last Movie (1971) received the CIDALC Award at the Venice Film Festival, but was a flop in theaters, causing him to temporarily retreat from the limelight. He made his comeback in 1977, performing in Wim Wender’s The American Friend, and in Coppola’s Apocalypse Now (1979). He took up directing again in 1981 with Out of the Blue, that was then presented in the competition section in Cannes. He also played several memorable roles on screen, starring in Rumble Fish (1983), Blue Velvet (1986), and Speed (1994). He made a successful directorial comeback in 1988 with the feature Colors.
