Philip Marlowe is investigating the disappearance of Velma, a night club dancer and the moll of a gangster who has just been released from prison. Based on Chandler’s tale Farewell, My Lovely, a contorted intrigue in a gloomy and deadened Los Angeles. Robert Mitchum is fantastic; crumpled and too old for the job, he seems to have already seen all the evil the city has to offer. Charlotte Rampling is ambiguous and dangerous. Dick Richards directs without nostalgia, but with a lucid, “hyper-realistic” awareness of the legend’s hopelessness.
