Robert Eroica Dupea is a pianist, but he has left his bourgeois, intellectual family to go on the road. While working on an oil pipeline, he learns that his father is sick and decides to return home. A backward journey, the story of an impossible return, of roots that are both regretted and endured with difficulty, a tour de force by Jack Nicholson (perhaps his best performance). The second movie directed by Rafelson is a bastion. Star turns are the clumsy, petulant maid Karen Black and Robert’s monologue before his mute father.
