IL VIAGGIO DI ETTORE

Ettore Pugliaro is a man from Genoa who worked for twenty years at the Italsider factory in Bagnoli. His children were born in Naples, and that’s where he stayed for as long as the plant was open. He returns there many years later: he gets off the train and walks to Bagnoli, crossing the town from east to west. But Italsider is gone, and with it so is most of Naples’ industrial side: the one he once knew, which he was proud to be a part of, and which represented the city’s modern soul for many decades.

“During the second half of the 20th century, Naples was an industrial city. But this fact was removed, as if its thousand-year-old soul couldn’t bear anything more. Over the last ten years, the version of Naples characterized by the degradation of its suburbs has asserted itself in the mainstream media; but it was its working class soul that represented the very best of the city’s civil consciousness. The film traces the story of ‘Naples as it once was’, highlighting how the factory’s closing meant loosing this fundamental component: not just in terms of jobs, but also its ‘capability to’ and ‘possibility of.’”
