In 1930s Hollywood, Boy Wonder, a maestro of silent cinema who has fallen on hard times, directs porn movies for a living. A claustrophobic tour de force by an obsessed Richard Dreyfuss (who had become famous the year before with American Graffiti), who is locked up in his house with young actresses ready to do anything and threatened by a bootlegger who is about to become a movie mogul (an allusive, perfidious Bob Hoskins), a caustic and wicked portrait of the Movie Mecca, distantly inspired by Sternberg.
